An Introduction As radical queers we resist the state’s control over our bodies and our lives. As such, actively supporting queer and trans folks en- slaved by the prison-industrial complex must be a part of our queer anarchist praxis and analysis. We must understand the State’s mechanisms of control over our bodies, our lers and our sexualities, and at the same ime, express solidarity with those in its jaws. Prison is a site of mi /, solitude, con- straint, banality and violence for all prisoners. But there are some who these at- trocities to a greater inten: of suffering. In supporting p ers, it is vital to critique and understand the way the prison system works to control certain bodies; transfolk, pom of color, queer people, sex workers, disal folks and womyn. It thus becomes clear why a focus on queer and trans prison solidarity is woefully necessary in our resistance. Writing to prisoners is an extremely mean- ingful way to offer emotional support to those inside. Writing allows us to develop relation- ships with other queer and transfolks which in turn gives us a understanding of the

The New dersey 4 On August 18, 2006, seven young Afri- can American lesbians traveled to New York City from their homes in Newark for a regu- lar night out. When walking down the street, a man sexually propositit one of the women. After refusing to take no for an answer, he as- saulted them. The women tried to defend them- selves, and a fight broke out. The women were charged with Gang Assault in the 2nd degree, a Class C Felony with a mandatory minimum of 3.5 years. Patreese Johnson was addition- ally charged with 1st Degree Assault. Three of the women accepted plea offers. On June 14th, 2007 Venice Brown (19), Terrain Dandri sm), Patreese Johnson (20), and Renata Hill re- ceived sentences ranging from 3 12 to 11 years in prison. The case of the New Jersey 4 lllustrates the intersecting oppressions of race, gender and sexuality. r situation exposes how the prison industrial complex operates to punish and imprison the bodies of queers, womyn and people of color who resist queerbashing and misogynist violence. .

Some Tips for Writing 1. In your first letter, it is always good to introduce yourself and tell some thlngl about you, but be smart about sharing personal information with folks you don’t know. Be clear about why you’re writing. 2. Research prison guildines for mail. Prisons have many absurd regula- tions in terms of what can or cannot be sent in the mail. 3. Be sure to pm your return address and the persol w ’re wi to’s name nnd # nn . They often do not get thu envelope. 4. Remember, that the folks you’re writing to are people. Do not token- ize, romanticize or politicize their experience. 5. Don’t talk about sketchy shit. It can get both of ya’ll in trouble.

Some Tips for Writing

1. In your first letter, it is always good
to introduce yourself and tell

some thlngl about you, but be smart
about sharing personal information
with folks you don’t know. Be clear
about why you're writing.

2. Research prison guildines for mail.
Prisons have many absurd regula-
tions in terms of what can or cannot
be sent in the mail.

3. Be sure to pm your return address

and the persol w 're wi to’s

often do not get thu envelope.

4. Remember, that the folks you're
writing to are people. Do not token-
ize, romanticize or politicize their
experience.

5. Don't talk about sketchy shit. It can
get both of ya'll in trouble.
